ARTIST STATEMENT
Scott Lyle Marshall B; 1955
Although I have a degree in Interior Design from the University of Florida, I have no formal art training. I have been making art since childhood, and watercolor has been my choice of medium. I am at a time in my life where I intend to devote more time to making paintings.
Why do I make paintings. A little introspection is require in order to answer that question. It's really gratifying, yes of course it is. Daily routines can be grueling, so making art is a privileged distraction.
Making art is an unconstrained process. That's magnetic to me. Most everything else we experience has fencelines. It's real freedom of expression to wander aimlessly in the art landscape. However, this freedom makes it inherently difficult to choose what and how to paint. It's not unlike facing the seemingly endless breakfast cereal aisle in the grocery store. It can be daunting. I try to focus on what I see and feel around me, and then document those experiences on the paper.
Color always inspires me. Who doesn't think color is an extraordinary phenomenon.
Lastly, I can make something that is unique only to me, something that has never existed before. That is a big enticement for me.
